LET'S BE MERMAIDS - COPENHAGEN DAY2

Updated: Jul 7, 2019

Day 2 of #Alllooora3.0 in Copenhagen.included a lot of walking and sightseing.

We could not miss the Little Mermaid, which is indeed little, still nice to see. Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen' s fairy tale of the same name, it was unveiled on 23 August 1913. It was a gift from Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen to the City of Copenhagen. Jacobsen fell in love with the fairy tale's character after watching the namesake ballet performance at the Royal Danish Theatre. So captivated he was by the performance and fairy tale itself, that he immediately commissioned the sculptor Edvard Eriksen to create a sculpture of the mermaid. The fairy tale is about a mermaid who gives up everything to be united with a young, handsome prince on land. Every morning and evening she swims to the surface from the bottom of the sea and, perched on her rock in the water, she stares longingly towards the shore hoping to catch a glimpse of her beloved prince

Quite close to the Little Mermaid is the Amalienborg Palace. This is the home of the Danish royal family and it consists of four identical classical palace façades with rococo interiors around an octagonal courtyard. Amalienborg was originally built for four noble families; but, when Christiansborg Palace burned, the royal family bought the palaces and moved in. Over the years various kings and their families have resided in the four different palaces.

Next we visited the Danmark Design Museum. This was one of the highlights of our trip. The museum collections are an ode to Danish design and designers and they are very well curated. You get the feeling right from the entrance where a giant orange chair sets the mood.

Inside the museum, the hero of the exhibitions is the collection display of design chairs arranged in a way that reminds of the film 2001 A Space Odyssey. My absolute favorites were the red iconic Verner Panton chair and the Whishbone chair by Hans J. Wegner

The posters section of the Danmark also rocks. See a couple of examples that indicate why.

Lest we forget fashion.

For dinner we hit Les Trois Cochons. This is a cosy french bistrot with instaworthy styling and easygoing beat. Recommended.

Day 3 of #Alllooora3.0 in Copenhagen to follow suit. Stay tuned
