tourist in my city VOL2, #MURALISM

Updated: Feb 10, 2020

Last year I posted an article bearing the title "Tourist in my city". It was about the #AthensTrigono.

I thought I 'd come back and make "Tourist in My City" a series. It is about always being inspired to go out and explore Athens on a Saturday morning.

This time the inspiration is #Murals. The city that is best known for its murals is L.A. However, if you look closely, you will find that there are some really nice ones hidden in Athens, too. Different techniques, different styles, what they all have in common is they serve as great backdrops to any laid back insta-worthy photo. Not to mention their decorative value in da hood.

First off, the street art weaving mural on the facade of the newly opened restaurant Proveleggios, which takes its name by Aristomenis Proveleggios, the notorious architect that built the building housing the restaurant.

Weaving mural by artist Paul Tsakonas - Proveleggios Athens, 11 Paramythias street , Metaxourgeion.

There are a lot of graffiti artist efforts in the area of Gkazi. But on 34 Iera Odos, there is a classic street art large scale graffiti.

Walking down Praxitelous street, towards the #AthensTrigono, the artist Nikolaos Tsounakas was commissioned by nearby Hotel Blend, to draw a large scale mural. The mural was inspired by Aesop's tale 'The Lion and the Mouse'. Credits to Irini D. who shared it with me so I can share it here with you.

One block further from 'The Lion and the Mouse', there is a cubist art graffiti. It is simple but quite impressive.

The former #BigKahuna is now relaunched as #StevesDeliTavern, in a garage-like ambiance that lives and breathes italo-newyorker breeze.. The branding painted on its front door apart from totally authentic is also totally instagrammable.

Steve's, 42 Salaminos Street, Kerameikos.

One of my favorite and in my opinion most impressive Athens murals can be found behind the #Monastiraki metro station. Credits to Dimitris B. who shared it with me.

Last for the moment, a square-tile mosaic in the center of Gkazi, across #Gasoline bar. It says I love Athens - a great line to complement the mood of this post

23A Gargittion Street, Gkazi.

I love #Murals and I am becoming addicted to discovering more. I call this addiction #Muralism. Which murals have you discovered? Let me know by posting your #AthensMural photo on Instagram and tag me https://www.instagram.com/elina_svirou
